Obtaining your learner’s licence is your first step to getting behind the wheel and learning to drive.
A learner’s licence is a written test at a registered test centre and is valid for 24 months. In order to secure a booking you must abide by the following requirements:
- You must be at least 17 years old.
You must be in possession of a valid ID document to secure a booking.
Only when you are in possession of a learner’s licence, can you legally drive the type of vehicle code your learner’s licence has been issued in.
You can only drive with a learner’s licence provided you are accompanied by a licensed passenger.

K53 LEARNER’S LICENCE TEST
WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY OF YOUR LEARNER’S LICENCE TEST.
GETTING TO THE TEST & BACK
On the day of your learner’s licence test your qualified driving instructor will collect you at your preferred address and take you to the DLTC where the examination will take place.
We will ensure that you arrive at least an hour before the test in order to get in some last-chance revisions and to mitigate any risk of traffic that might delay getting there.
Once you have completed your test you will be dropped back at your preferred address.
ON ARRIVAL
30 minutes before the test you will need to report to the reception area so that they know you are present. You will then be seated in a waiting area ahead of the commencement of your test.
Just before the test begins you will be directed to a desk where you will complete the test on either a computer or using a pen and paper
The format of the test entirely depends on the DLTC you have booked to complete your learner’s licence test at.
THE LEARNER'S LICENCE TEST
The examiner will explain how the test is to be conducted and which sections you must answer.
The test normally consists of 68 questions spread across rules of the road, road signs, signals and markings, and control of the vehicle.
The allocation of questions between the various sections may change from time to time, as well as the required pass marks.
WHAT TO BRING ON THE DAY OF YOUR TEST
As the saying goes, “if you fail to prepare, prepare to fail”. Be sure that you are prepared for your learner’s licence test by bringing the following:
- Your original ID document.
- A copy of your ID document.
- 2 x ID photos.
- R60 for the issuing of your learner’s licence.
- A black pen.
- Water & sweets to stay alert.
